COURSE DESCRIPTION: The first step in the cruising scheme theory pathway. This excellent course gives a basic introduction to essential navigation and safety for anyone new to boating; Sailors, power-boaters, sea anglers, divers, boat-masters, experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors, as well as inshore racers.

The course content includes charts and publications, safety, buoyage, tidal awareness, basic navigation and pilotage, rules of the road, electronic navigation, anchoring, weather forecasts, and passage planning.

This is an online course; you will receive a course pack that includes a chart, plotter, dividers, course handbook, exercises, and an electronic chart plotter CD which can either be collected or sent out by post.

All you need is a computer with an internet connection.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Safe and Fun, RYA safeguarding course is a prerequisite for all new dinghy, windsurf & senior instructors, as well as Level 2 Race Coaches; however it can be taken by anyone who wishes to work or volunteer in a club or centre.

The course provides the knowledge and skills needed to work in a club environment, reproducing realistic scenarios that you could encounter.

Whilst an estimation of 3 hours is suggested, there is no time limit as the course is online. A certificate is issued once the course is completed.

PLEASE NOTE: When you book this course we need to MANUALLY set you up on the RYA Interactive system. This is the same for ALL RYA schools. We will set you up by close of play the next working day. We apologise for this delay but this is an RYA requirement and not down to us. :)

DURATION: 10 hours

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Phonetic Alphabet knowledge, passport-sized photo, and 3 hours home study from the handbook provided. Students are also encouraged to try the taster course on the RYA website.

ABILITY AT COURSE END: The certificate holder is authorised to use a marine VHF radio with digital selective calling onboard a British vessel fitted with radio equipment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: RYA Short Range Certificate marine radio course will authorise the holder to use a marine VHF radio with digital selective calling onboard a British vessel fitted with radio equipment. The course will cover issuing and responding to Mayday alerts as well as other vital information to help keep you safe afloat.

A ten-hour course including three hours of home study prior to the course using the handbook included and provided at the time of booking your course. The course will be taught and examined using radio simulators.

The final exam (required for licence) must be taken at the SeaSports Southwest Centre, which includes a short written test, and a practical assessment and is run by a separate assessor.

There is a charge of £76 payable to the RYA for the Exam and license in addition to the course cost.

Exams may be booked and at the same time as the classroom course or on a separate date when SeaSports is running an exam day. Exams are taken in groups of no more than 4 students.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: “The 1-Day RYA First Aid course will provide a thorough grounding in first aid techniques with particular reference to small craft afloat.”

In a medical emergency, a little first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations. This one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support skippers.

It fulfills the requirements for professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of safe haven. The course is recommended by the MCA and HSE and satisfies the requirements of some categories of commercial work afloat, including boat masters.

A valid certificate is a requirement for the Coastal Skipper, and Yachtmaster Offshore examinations as well as all RYA Instructor and BCU Coaching awards.

Manuals are distributed during the course for attendees to keep which is included in the price. Tea and Coffee will be provided, but you will be expected to provide your own lunch (good facilities are available nearby).
