PWCs (JET SKIs) - SAFETY, ETIQUETTE AND RESPONSIBILITY

PWC Courses at SeaSports Southwest

New legislation passed on 31st March 2023 means that failure to ensure a watercraft is operated in a safe manner can result in imprisonment! Never has it been more important to receive proper training before riding a PWC (JetSki).

Personal Watercraft (PWC), also referred to as Jet Skis, are no longer just toys for the rich and famous – they are an accessible, easy to learn and exhilarating way to explore the coast. However, whilst they are easily accessible, they are still a powered craft at sea and both of these elements require due respect, judgement and knowledge.

The legislation which came into force on March 31st, places a duty on the owner of a watercraft within UK waters to take all reasonable steps to ensure that it is operated in a safe manner. If the owner fails to do so then they may commit an offence that is punishable by imprisonment for a term, not exceeding two years or a fine, or both..

This is why, here at SeaSports, we focus on helping people to learn how to operate a PWC safely with respect and courtesy for all of those around them and with the additional knowledge needed to keep themselves and other vessels safe at sea

All of our courses and experiences are run under the safe supervision of a qualified instructor.  We will ensure that you understand the basics of riding a personal watercraft safely and with respect for others, wildlife, and the environment, in the shelter of the estuary, before heading out to sea to enjoy a ride along the coastline, at planing speeds on the open sea.

Our aim is to help everyone on our courses to become a self-sufficient, safe and aware PWC rider. You can gain RYA certification, which thankfully more and more locations are insisting on before you can launch a PWC.  Our high level of expertise, length and breadth of experience means that we also teach instructor courses too, in fact Tim travels around the world teaching instructors, when he isn’t sunning himself in balmy Teignmouth!
